Composition of gastrointestinal content, protease and lipase activities in summer and winter of four freshwater siluriforms (Teleostei: Actinopterygii) with two different feeding habits Rev. Bras. Zool.
Almeida,Ana Paula Gottlieb; Zardo,Everton Luis; Toni,Candida; Behr,Everton Rodolfo; Silva,Leila Picolli da; Vieira,João Paes; Loro,Vania Lúcia; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine the composition of gastrointestinal content and protease and lipase activities in summer and winter as well as to evaluate the relationship between digestive enzyme activity and centesimal composition of gastrointestinal content and feeding habits of two omnivorous species, Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) and Pimelodus maculatus (LaCèpede, 1803), and of two detritivorous species, Loricariichthys anus (Valenciennes, 1835) and Hypostomus commersoni (Valenciennes, 1836). The activities of pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and lipase, and the levels of proteins and lipids in the gastrointestinal tract, were evaluated. The enzyme activities were not related to the centesimal composition of gastrointestinal...

Gill rakers in six teleost species: influence of feeding habit and body size Ciência Rural
Almeida,Ana Paula Gottlieb; Behr,Everton Rodolfo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
This study analyzed the structure of the gill rakers of Parapimelodus valenciennis and Parapimelodus nigribarbis (planktivorous), Serrasalmus maculatus and Hoplias malabaricus (piscivorous), Iheringichthys labrosus (benthophagous) and Hypostomus commersonii (detritivorous) and related it with the body size and feeding habits of these species. The species of Parapimelodus and H. commersonii showed long, filiform and closely spaced gill rakers, similar to those of species that use the gill rakers as a filter to assist in the retention of small particles. The widely spaced gill rakers of I. labrosus probably allow the retention of insect larvae, but not particles of inorganic matter. In H. malabaricus and S. maculatus the gill rakers are most likely related...

Morphometric parameters comparisons of the digestive tract of four teleosts with different feeding habits Ciência Rural
Becker,Alexssandro Geferson; Gonçalves,Jamile Fabbrin; Garcia,Luciano Oliveira; Behr,Everton Rodolfo; Graça,Dominguita Luhers; Kurtz Filho,Mário; Martins,Tessie; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The present study compared some morphometric parameters of the digestive tract of four teleosts with different feeding habits: traira (Hoplias malabaricus, carnivore), silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen, omnivore), hassar (Hoplosternum littorale, omnivore), and grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella, herbivore). The digestive tract was removed from fish collected from nature and fixed for some morphometric analyses, such as: intestinal quotient, intestinal area quotient, vilosity height, digestive somatic index, and hepatosomatic index. Grass carp showed the highest values of intestinal quotient and height vilosity. On the other hand, the intestinal area quotient was higher in traira than in the other species. The intestinal quotient can be used to estimate the...

Population structure and reproductive biology of Loricariichthys melanocheilus Reis & Pereira, 2000 (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in the rio Ibicuí, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Zardo,Éverton Luís; Behr,Everton Rodolfo.
The objective of this study was to analyze population structure (spatial distribution, seasonal distribution and distribution by length classes, sex ratio and length-weight relationship) and aspects of the reproductive biology of Loricariichthys melanocheilus. Fish were sampled bimonthly using gillnets and trammel nets in lentic and lotic environments in the rio Ibicuí, between the years 2000 and 2001. Were collected 410 specimens: 230 females, 164 males and 16 specimens whose sex could not be determined. A greater number of specimens were collected in October/November and December/January and in lentic environments. The greater length classes had a higher amount of females (p < 0.05) and the sex ratio in all sampling periods was 1.38 females per male....

Urophysial and pituitary extracts for spawning induction in teleosts Ciência Rural
Behr,Everton Rodolfo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Parra,Walter Garcia; Brandão,Deodoro Atlante; Herke,Zolst.
Several studies have suggested that the caudal neurosecretory system could act on fish reproduction. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of urophysial extract (UE) and carp pituitary homogenate (CPH) on the induction of spawning in Hoplias malabaricus, Rhamdia quelen and Cyprinus carpio. The amount of UE injected was 1.0 to 3.0mg/kg L.W. (single dose) and CPH 3.0 to 4.0mg/kg L.W. (two doses). The application of UE had no effect on spawning induction, while CPH improved spawning of all studied species.
